As we enter another week, I want us to be intentional about celebrating the good happening all around us.

In education, it is easy to move quickly from one challenge, deadline, or responsibility to the next without stopping to recognize our progress. But celebration matters. It reminds us that the work is making a difference. It gives us an opportunity to recognize one another, appreciate our students, and acknowledge the moments, big and small, that are helping us build the culture we want at John Marshall.

This week alone, we have plenty to celebrate: our English Department led a successful Literacy Week, our seniors gathered for Senior Sunrise, our students participated in voter registration, and staff continue to create meaningful experiences for our Justices every day.

As we celebrate, we also continue to hold the standard. Celebration and accountability go hand in hand. We can recognize what is going well while remaining consistent about the expectations that will move our school forward.

So this week, notice the wins. Name them. Celebrate them. And when you see a colleague or student doing something worth recognizing, tell them.

There is good work happening at John Marshall. Let’s make sure we celebrate it. 💙⚖️

Principal Battle

👔 NEW! MEN OF MARSHALL PRESENTS: TAILORED TUESDAYS

Every Tuesday, the men of John Marshall High School are invited to Dress to Impress!

Students and staff, let’s elevate the standard, represent ourselves with pride, and show what it means to look sharp and carry ourselves with confidence.

STAFF, LET’S SET THE EXAMPLE! Our students are watching. Let’s show them that how we present ourselves matters.

Suit up. Dress sharp. Walk with confidence.

We have had several field trip requests denied because they were not received within the required timeline. Please remember:

⚠️ The 45-day requirement is the Central Office deadline, not the deadline to submit your packet to Principal Battle.

JMHS EXPECTATION: 50 DAYS IN ADVANCE

Please submit your completed field trip packet to Principal Battle at least 50 days before the proposed trip date.

This allows a minimum of five days for school-level review, including time to review the request, identify any needed corrections, obtain signatures, and forward the completed packet to Central Office.

Please plan ahead and submit complete packets. If corrections are needed, the approval timeline may be impacted.

Our goal is to get our students out of the building and into meaningful learning experiences, we just have to plan early enough to get them approved.

We’re launching a JMHS Staff Book Club!

A Google Form will be shared to determine who is interested in joining. Mrs. Thompson will add book topics for staff to vote on, and we’ll use the results to help shape our first selection.

This is an opportunity to read, connect, have good conversation, and grow together. Be on the lookout for the interest form!

We have established expectations for our building, and now our responsibility is to ensure students experience them consistently across JMHS.

Please continue reinforcing our core expectations: no cell phones or headphones during instructional time; students leaving class must have a JMHS lanyard hall pass; students should remain in their assigned instructional spaces; schoolwide dress expectations must be enforced; attendance must be accurate and timely; and staff should be visible and actively supervising during transitions and assigned duties.

Need a lanyard? Please reach out to Ms. Smith. Every classroom must have access to the appropriate hall-pass lanyard. Our students should not have to determine which expectations apply based on which adult is present.

As we approach our first academic reporting period, all JMHS teachers should ensure that grades are current, accurate, and entered consistently.

Beginning this school year, teachers in grades 5–12 are expected to use Canvas to track and enter all assignments given to students. Canvas should serve as the running record of graded assignments, with grades synced to PowerSchool.

⚠️ IMPORTANT GRADEBOOK DEADLINE

All scores, assignment updates, and grade changes must be fully submitted in PowerTeacher Pro by 11:59 PM on the final day of each reporting term. Gradebooks will automatically lock at midnight.

✓ All assignments are entered in Canvas

 ✓ Student scores are current

 ✓ Canvas and PowerSchool are syncing appropriately

 ✓ Missing/incomplete assignments are accurately reflected

 ✓ Students and families can see an accurate picture of current academic progress

This past week, our juniors and seniors had the opportunity to participate in a Voter Registration event facilitated by trained members of the Richmond Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Thank you to our teachers for supporting student participation and to our community partners for helping our young people understand the importance of civic engagement and making their voices count. Thanks Dr. Coleman for your leadership on this.

Last week, we welcomed Drs. Travis and Travan Jasper back to John Marshall High School for a visit and conversation about ways they can support our students and school community.

As fellow JMHS alumni, moments like this are a reminder that the legacy of John Marshall extends far beyond graduation. Our Justices leave, lead, achieve, and come back to pour into the next generation.
